I know I've mentioned this before, but running a blog takes a lot of work. Some people don't quite get this - they think all we do is play online and sit our jammies all day. Ok - so there are days I am in my pajamas all day... but that doesn't mean I'm not working!

I think there is this misconception that since I'm working from the home, I'm not actually working. But I feel there needs to be some clarification here. Mostly so in the future the next time I'm insulted when someone asks "are you even looking for work" I can just give them a link and walk away.

I'm almost to week 130 of unemployment - we're coming up to one full year since my unemployment benefits ran out, and almost 3 years since I was laid off. I'm not going to adopt the name Week 130er - well that just don't sound right does it? :).

So here we are, three years after being laid off. I've been unable to find a 9-5 job and most part time positions wont touch me because of my degrees. But would I change it? Not at all.

Yes, money is always a concern - There are weeks that the last of my money either goes to putting gas in the car or food in the fridge - but I am not unhappy with how life has changed. I don't mind the schedule of my lifestyle, and I can say that I've picked up enough freelance work that I'm considered "self employed" instead of "unemployed".

There are days it gets overwhelming - but I know I'm in a lot better position than others who lost their job.

I've stumbled upon other bloggers lately who are also 99ers. Reading their articles I find there are a lot of people who aren't making it - and my heart aches for them and their stories. This is a small snippet from one blog I found:

"My benefits ran out in July.  The bill collectors are calling!  I can’t tell the last day that I paid the mortgage.  By tomorrow, I’ll pull out the last $1,000 from my IRA to pay the electricity, Internet for the this month and next. I’ll have to pay taxes for my car by next month so that I can register my car in February – I have no money for it!  But, I have two wishes as I write this letter.  One, I wish it was still possible for me to cry.  And, I wish God would take his breath from me." ~TCSPlanet Blog

I hope the 99er who wrote that article has been able to see some help and relief from their situation. But it's not the first article like that I'f found.

99ers - there is hope out there. Use the programs as they are available to you. If you can get on food benefits, or state assistance. Reach out to community groups and see if they can help you out. I know that there are a lot overwhelmed right now. Those unemployment numbers don't include us 99ers. Reinvent yourself and keep going strong!

TCSPlant Blog also has an article about an 99er flyer and a way to keep other 99ers going and supported. Please look at this page and think of the other 99ers out there that still need support.

You've made it through being laid off from your job, you've made it through 99 weeks of unemployment - now what?

I was faced with this question a while back - it's hard to answer. I don't think there is one answer to that question for everyone but let's take a look at what the next steps are for a Week 99er and what happens next in the system.

Before I even start looking at Week 100 I want to cover something. There is this misconception that people on unemployment are lazy, or aren't looking for work. I honestly was offended by this, and wish people would do a bit of research before they make statements like that.

There are two major issues with that blanket statement. The first is, if a person is unemployment it means they have earned it. Let me put that another way - it means they lost a good job and paid into the system, so the benefits they are currently getting they paid into for all the time they were at that job.

The second issue I have with that statement is a person is on federal extensions of their unemployment - or made it into the program that had extensions (after 6 months) they have to do more to continue to get their benefits. No longer are they able to just submit a form or call in every other week. In the last extension period you are required to apply to three jobs a week - yes THREE a week - in order to keep getting the benefits they are using to live with.

So people on unemployment benefits worked, and continue to seek work - so they are not lazy. They look for jobs more than a highschool or college student looking for quick cash - why? Because we have bills, because we have grown use to eating meals that are more than packets of dried flavor and noodles.

So once we've made it through all 99 weeks of unemployment benefits, if you were lucky enough to get 99 weeks - where do you go from there? Like I said before - there isn't a good answer.

My advice? Keep going. There are a lot worse places to be than where you are, and there are assistance programs through your state and county.

The economy still sucks - there is no nice way to put that. There are jobs out there, or at least postings for jobs but I've found they usually aren't hiring. Those last 22 weeks applying for 3 jobs a week- that's 66 jobs I never even heard back from. 66 job's that have postings on the Michigan Works site and other places that don't even respond.

You might wonder why if they have a posting they aren't replying to people applying. It's simple- there is a huge amount of people who need jobs. People are applying to any and all job they might in some way be qualified for - for one job opening there are hundreds if not thousands of applicants - they simply can't reply to everyone who responds.

It stinks - it does.

Now if you are still luck enough to be employed, you might be saying right now "But I read the unemployment rate is dropping - that means people are getting jobs right?"

Wrong! If you are like me, and have made it through 99 weeks of unemployment you fall off the chart. They no longer count you in the "unemployment numbers" since you are no long reporting. There are plenty of people who just give up searching for a job. What's the point since places aren't hiring?

So if you are a Week 99er, and you're facing week 100 soon - what do you do? Keep on keeping on. It sounds silly, it does, but there is light at the end of the tunnels.

Some tips I've found useful:
  • Find ways to stretch the dollars, there are a lot of ways to do that. We're sure finding that out aren't we?
  • Keep looking - as the economy starts to pick up, jobs will open up and you will find that one for you.
  • Find a way to do freelance work - This is my personal favorite. It has kept me sane and helped me pay bills. (Remember on this one you have to claim all the funds you make, if it's over $600 you will be charged Self-Employment tax which in Michigan is 12% instead of regular tax of 6%) Make sure you record everything, work on contracts and receipts - keep everything legit!
  • Don't get sucked into a work at home scam - if you are going to work at home, make sure it's with a legitimate company, or create your own.
  • If you are in a place where you need assistance, don't hesitate to ask for it! You have paid your taxes, and have earned those benefits, there is no shame in asking for what you've earned.

So now what's next? Living your life - keep moving on. You will make it! There is light at the end of the tunnel.

When people ask me what I do for a living (which has come up a lot lately for some reason) I pause. My old answer was "I'm unemployed/self-employed" and then would go into spiel of explaining what I do for freelance work. Now I simply say "I'm self employed". I don't have the security of having a steady income, or unemployment benefits there to catch me if I don't get work. It forces me to push harder in my businesses and bring in some funds.

Week 100 is scary, but it's not the end. Keep your chin up and keep going!

I made my call to MARVIN today - my last call. That's right, I am officially a Week 99er. My last deposit will be made tomorrow and is for only one week's worth of benefits. I have a temporary consulting gig starting this week for one day a week, so I'm not that worried (yet). I'll be honest - it sucks, but it's the reality of the market.

While we were out filling the back of an SUV this was delivered. It's a full case of Similac - shipped.. all for free! Since Coupon Baby is a bit too old for these and we have yet to make the addition to our little family, I will be donating these to a local shelter for their use.  Other than some PetCo coupons, there was nothing good in my mail today - although I didn't make it to the UPS box, so I will find out tomorrow what exactly came.

I left this morning with my friend and the baby with the goal of spending $100 or less, hands full of envelopes of coupons and lists.. crazy lists.

I will be making another trip out to Meijers to try to take advantage of the Sweet Baby Rays and Salsa deals - I'm going to wait a day or so until everything gets (hopefully restocked). But otherwise, we got everything on our lists!

And with a $6.77 lunch at Arby's, I stayed on budget, and snagged some fantastic deals!

How did you do? What good deals have you found?

Well, it is my last month on unemployment.. I can't exactly remember if I have 2 or 3 weeks left.. I guess my call to MARVIN on the 23rd will probably be my last. I should be worried about it - but honestly I'm not yet. I'm not sure if it just hasn't hit me or if I don't really have a reason to be worried about it yet.

I'm about to be come a Week 99er - that is someone who has been on State and Federal unemployment benefits for the full 99 weeks. I consider myself lucky enough to have it made it this far. I know people who have been laid off before me and after who only received 6 months of benefits. To make it a full 99 weeks is not something that most people actually get, so for that I'm very lucky.

I think the worst part of unemployment was the first month after being laid off. I felt lost and completely let down. I was top of my class, promised full time at the firm when I graduated. My market crashed- lets face it Michigan has been in a depression for a while, and I live in Metro Detroit- job outlooks weren't the best.

But what have I done over the past (almost) two years? Doing small freelance jobs here and there to make ends meet, working on art work and making handmade jewelry. Trying to stretch the few dollars I have and to help out the best I can.

Before I started my graduate degree I use to coupon- but nothing like I've been starting now. My Co-Workers laughed at me clipping coupons on the night shift while we made reservations for luxury cars. I was saving a bit of money, but I had more than I do now.

Now as I'm looking at the last couple weeks of my unemployment I'm working on stretching the few dollars and the few I'm making here and there further. Which is getting harder with rising gas prices and costs of everything.

To say I was inspired by TLC's Extreme Couponing is close, but it was more of a kick in the pants. I have watched some of the episodes and I can't help but think it's a bit more than organized hoarding. Although as I have begun to coupon I start to see the appeal and the rush you get. We don't have the space in our house for a ton of items, so I'll have to shop with some reserve :).

So here we go- let's enjoy the ride and see where the adventure takes us!
