I've mentioned a Coupon ratio a couple times when I've talked about deals at Walgreens. You might wonder what the heck it is.
According to Walgreen's Coupon Policy "The number of manufacturer coupons, including Register Rewards manufacturer coupons, may not exceed the number of items in the transaction. The total value may not exceed the value of the transaction. Sales tax must be paid, if required by state law."
That seems simple right? You can't have more coupons than you have products. And Register Rewards (RR) count towards coupons. So you have 4 body washes and 4 coupons - you can use each coupon for each item - but you cannot apply a RR reward towards it since your coupon ratio is currently 1:1.
Ever wonder why I have random candy on the transaction? If you add a piece of candy, you now have one more item and you can add those RR towards your transaction. I try to find something cheap, on sale - depends on the week. Last week Dove candy bars were 39¢ - so I may add that towards my transaction but I can use a $5.00 RR off my bill total.
Now the only thing that gets tricky with RR, and I almost got burned by this today is those $X/2 coupons. I went to get the Oscar Mayer hot dogs, and actually had to go to a second location because someone cleared the shelf at the one near me. I have enough coupons to do that but just wanted to get a few today. The coupon I have is for $1/2 packages. I went to the register with 6 packages of hot dogs and 3 coupons - at first glance this should be fine with the coupon policy. BUT since the coupon applies to 2 items.. they count it twice. So that brought me up to 6 items and 6 coupons- and that $4 RR I wanted to use wouldn't apply towards my transaction.
If it wasn't bad enough that I wasn't expecting this, the cashier didn't know it did that either. I quickly grabbed some M&Ms and added it to the bill and it fixed the issue completely. Yes I had to pay an extra 70 cents but I was able to get everything cheap.
So overall 6 packages of hot dogs and one bag of M&M's for 2.66. To quote my nephew "Hot Dog Hot Dog Hot Diggity Dog!"
